Case Study in Fire Resistance
Mountain Top Residence is a case study in fire resistant strategies. Located in the Santa Monica Mountains, where the environment presents challenging conditions for homes. Heavy winds, high temperatures and brush create ideal conditions for wildfires. The project reacts to these elements through intentional site planning, facade composition, and material choices.

01 - Site Planning
All about defensible space. There is always at least a 10’ buffer between the home and surrounding vegetation. Planting is brought close to the home in contained planters.

02 - Facade Composition
No awnings, overhangs, attic vents or exposed crawl spaces. A goal of the design was to eliminate any opportunity for embers to spread inside or get stuck against the building.

03 - Material Selection
The exterior walls are wrapped in two layers of 5/8” gypsum board and then clad in black asphault shingles. The shingles are one of the most fire resistant materials on the market. It creates a monolithic expression with textural richness.
